What Is THATCH?
Thatch is composed of intermingled layers ofliving and dead stems, stolons, rhizomes, and roots between the green vegetation and the soil surface. A thin layer of thatch is normal even healthy, since it retains some moisture in the soil and increases wear tolerance. But a II2" layer or more of thatch blocks air, light and water trom reaching the root zone. Thick thatch is not necessarily a result of neglect. In fact, it is often the well-kept lawn that suffers the most as fast growing turf produces more thatch. Some turf species or cultivars produce thatch quicker than others.
What harm can THATCH cause?
A thick mat of thatch prevents water and fertilizer trom seeping down to the turfs root zone. Starving your grass is not the only problem. Thatch can also suffocate your lawn. It can prevent oxygen trom reaching the roots and cause grass to take root closer to the surface, even in the thatch itself. Also, thatch makes an excellent breeding ground for harmful insects and disease organisms.
What can I do about THATCH?
Core Aeration is the best way to control thatch because it increases microbial action in the thatch. These microbes literally eat the thatch.
